Vintage 2009 - better than expected

Spain’s winemakers are starting to relax after a short and often challenging harvest. However, while the condition of the grapes caused some sleepless nights due to the lack of water and high temperatures, especially in August, the results are now pleasantly surprising for many bodegas.

New D.O.s for Spain - A Statement of Quality

Spain's commitment to quality wine production has been borne out by no fewer than four new Denominación d'Origens earning their stripes during 2008. All located in the huge political region of Castilla y León, they are as follows: Tierra de León, Arlanza, Tierra del Vino de Zamora and Arribes.

The area under vine is 1,465 hectares with 33 producers. The main focus is on red grape variety Prieto Picudo (50% of plantings). Other red grape varieties include Mencia, Tempranillo and Garnacha Tinta, with whites focusing on Verdejo, Albarín Blanco, Godello, Malvasia and Palomino. Tierra de León is located to the south of the Cordillera Cantábrica mountain range and in the southern part of the province of León. The winemaking tradition of the area goes back as far as the 10th century, but recent history has seen the development of Prieto Picudo as a really interesting indigenous grape varietal, championed by the region, with the DO stipulating that reds and rosés must contain a minimum of 60% Prieto Picudo or Mencia.

A cool 2008 for Spanish wines...

Not unlike 2007, it was a cool year across the Spanish wine regions. The weather conditions, especially a very wet May and low summer temperatures, slowed ripening and caused the harvest to run late, very late in some cases – in Rioja and Priorat grapes were still being picked in mid November.
